SRH’s owner Kavya Maran is being criticized and brutally roasted for buying Pakistani Player Abrar Ahmed in the Hundred Auction 2026. After the deal was done, the Franchise from IPL team Sunrise Hyderabad (SRH) became the debate on social media and was criticized for playing with the sentiment of the nation. This is the first time that any Indian franchise backing IPL T20 has signed a player from Pakistan.

Kavya Maran is an Indian businesswoman mostly known for her co-ownership of the IPL Cricket team Sunrisers Hyderabad. She is also executive Director of Sun TV Network. She was born in 1991 in Chennai. Her father Kalanithi Maran who is a founder of Sun Group. She has completed her B.com from Stella Maris College and MBA from New York University Stern School of Business.
BCCI’s response:
BCCI Vice president Rajeev Shukla clarified that the Board has no authority over franchise decisions in foreign leagues as it falls outside the jurisdiction of the BCCI.
Franchise explanation:
Head coach Daniel Vettori explained that the team needed a high-quality spin bowler and for that they go for Abrar Ahmed. The management emphasized that the decision was based on team strategy rather than politics.
Why this deal created criticism and controversy:
The Pakistan team has not participated in the IPL since 2008 due to geopolitical tensions between the countries, India and Pakistan. They only appeared playing ICC events. In Spite of knowing the reason the Sunriser Hyderabad franchise upset the Indian fans by signing the Pakistan player, it created anger amongst the fans. They have disappointed all the fans who support the Sunrise Hyderabad IPL team. It’s a complete disgrace from the franchise and this created a big question whether they prioritize performance over the emotions of cricket fans.
The controversy began after Sunrisers Leeds confirmed and posted Abrar Ahmed signing on social media platform X. After a few hours of posting this news, the social media got flooded with backlashes and negative comments all over the social media handle. Everywhere only one question was raised as what the need of a franchise was connected to an IPL team to select and sign a Pakistani player for The Hundred 2026. Kavya Maran is associated with the Franchise of IPL team and Sunrisers Leeds that is why she got criticized and trolled.
Just after the post from franchise signing Abrar Ahmed the official X (formerly Twitter) account of Sunrisers Leeds was suspended. When the users tried to open the account, a message popped stating, “Account Suspended”. The reason can be violating its platform rules.
Other Pakistan Players signed in The Hundred Auction 2026:
Apart from Abrar Ahmed, another spinner, Usman Tariq, got signed with Birmingham Phoenix for £140,000. Few of the players got unsold amongst them Star pacer Shah Afridi withdrew from the auction before it began whereas fast bowler Haris Rauf went unsold with a reserve price of £100,000.
